In a recent blog post on the Finland Futures Research Center website, hosting the Helsinki Node of The Millennium Project, Prof. Emerita Sirkka Heinonen, Co-Chair of the Node and recently elected member of the Millennium Project Board of Directors, and Project Researcher Amos Taylor share reflections from their roundtable discussion with Jerome Glenn and Cynthia Selin, invited speakers during the Futures Conference 2025 held in Turku, Finland.
The conversation delved into the evolving landscape of technology and work, addressing the certainties and opportunities in a future often described as full of uncertainties and risks. Jerome Glenn emphasized the transformative potential of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and synthetic biology, suggesting that these technologies could lead to new forms of wealth and a reduction in the cost of living. This, in turn, could pave the way for universal basic income, allowing individuals more freedom to pursue meaningful work and personal growth.
Cynthia Selin highlighted the importance of scenario planning in navigating the complexities of future developments. She discussed the productive power of certainties in scenario planning, advocating for a balanced approach that acknowledges both known and unknown factors in shaping future outcomes.
The roundtable, conducted for the ‘T-winning Spaces 2035′ project funded by EU NextGeneration and the Research Council of Finland, aimed to provide insights for students, futures researchers, and anyone interested in the futures of technology and work.
