For the eleventh consecutive time, The Millennium Project, in collaboration with Association of Professional Futurists (APF), Humanity+, Lifeboat Foundation, World Academy of Art and Science, and World Futures Studies Federation (WFSF), hosted World Futures Day, a global and open conversation on March 1st to discuss common challenges and possibilities for the futures.
The WFD Organizing Committee* estimated over 800 participants during the event, for an everage 38 participants per session and peaks of over 60 pp. along the 24-hours launched at 12 noon in New Zealand and moving westward hour-by-hour, ending 24 hours later in Hawaii.
World Futures Day 2024 began with tributes to Theodore J. Gordon, the “gentle giant” of futures research who recently passed away. Gordon was the Co-founder of The Millennium Project and contributed more to futures research methodologies than any other futurist in history. For the fifth time, Vint Cerf, Internet pioneer, joined WFD at 1 pm Eastern Time USA and further stimulated the conversation.
An impression of topics that were discussed biotechnology spacetravel, artificial intelligence ( including the field of AGI/ANI/ASI), education, health care, urbanization, economy, and many more, as the analysis will confirm in the next months.
A new AI-Augmented Futures Wheel, originally invented by Jerome Glenn, was also launched by the Brazil Node and put at the WFD facilitators’ disposal. Parallels events, such as World Futures Day – Young Voices by Teach the Future in collaboration with The Millennium Project, a workshop on Futures Wheel analysis by the Philippines Node, and a discussion in Spanish by Peru Node, were also run in parallel with WFD by The Millennium Project.
The Millennium Project wants to thank all the participants, the facilitators contributing to the sessions (complete list of facilitators available here), and the partners again for supporting this participatory open space of discussion again, and invites you to join World Futures Day 2025 – 12nd edition on March 1 next year!
*WFD 2024 Organizing Committee was composed by Jerome Glenn (MP Executive Director), Elizabeth Florescu (MP Director of Research), Mara Di Berardo (MP Communications Director & ITaly Node Co-Chair), Paul Epping (The Netherlands Node Chair), Brock Hinzmann (Silicon Valley Node Co-Chair), and Ibon Zugasti (MP Deputy Director and Spain Node Chair).
