The VI ALC–EU Academic Summit, held in Bogotá on October 10-12, 2025, reaffirmed the vital role of the academic community as a pillar of the Strategic Partnership between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean (ALC–EU).
More than 400 scholars and students from both regions gathered to engage in analysis, reflection, and the development of proposals for the upcoming IV CELAC–EU Summit of Heads of State and Government. The discussions focused on advancing an Academic Integration Agreement aimed at establishing a Common Area for Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, emphasizing the contributions of higher education to sustainable development, peace, and cooperation.
Among the participants were Ibon Zugasti, Deputy Director and Chair of the Spain Node of The Millennium Project, and Héctor Casanueva, Chair of the Chile Node of The Millennium Project, who both contributed to the debate on the future of academic collaboration and foresight in the region. Casanueva was among the organizers of the summit, and both he and Zugasti have supported this partnership from its inception, having signed the declaration to cooperate for the creation of the Common Space of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation and an Agreement for the Academic Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean with the European Union (LAC-EU) in September 2024.
This high-level academic meeting once again highlighted the importance of cooperation between universities, research centers, and international networks in shaping a shared and forward-looking agenda for both continents.
