“On Desired Remote Possibilities of the Future: Could Counterfactual Analysis Challenge Prognostic Reflexes?” is a new paper published Blagovesta Nikolova & Mariana Todorova, Chair of the Bulgaria Node of The Millennium Project, on the Journal of Futures Studies (in press).
Abstract: The current text pursues an argument in favor of unorthodox and unrestrained futures thinking defying what is usually considered to constitute a sound political judgement. Accordingly, the efforts in this paper are directed at finding a way to establish the reasonableness and coherence of alternative images of the future that are usually deemed implausible remote possibilities by the political realm. The problem that this endeavor represents will be approached from two conceptual vantage points that would eventually converge – the first one concentrating on the issue of plausibility, and the other – on the utility of counterfactuality.
