This trip furthered The Millennium Project’s work and communications to improve the understanding of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) issues as distinct from more arrow AI.
Jose Cordero, Chair of The Millennium Project’s Venezuela Node now living in Spain, got major business conferences in Madrid (South Summit) and Malaga (Digital Enterprise Show) to bring me to speak on AGI and business. Ibon Zugasti, Chair of the MP Node in Spain arranged for me to speak in Bilbao with Innobasque (the Basque Innovation Agency) and other organizations in the region for my most detailed 1.5-hour discussion of The Millennium Project AGI study (video may be available from Ibon). Innobasque now plans to approach the two Basque members of the European Parliament to introduced AGI governance for the EU. The recently approved EU AI Act is for narrow AI as a tool, not for AGI as an autonomous agent. So, hopefully there be an AGI (or AI 2.0) Act next.
Ibon, Jose, and I had several other meetings in Madrid. Ibon arranged a meeting with the director and senior futurist of OEI (leading Business School in Madrid) who would like The MP to create a futures training program for executives. Jose arranged my invitation to an intellectual salon hosted by his friend in his home where Simon Bolivar had lived to meet potential donors to continue our AGI reseach. Jose also arranged a meeting with the former PM of Ecuador and the AI Ethics director for Telefonica (who will forward our request to their corporate foundation for continued support for the AGI study). Will let you know the results of these funding discussions. Before flying back to Washington, DC, I gave a talk via Zoom to the Finland futures conference special Millennium Project session lead by Sirkka Heinonen, Chair of the Helsinki Node.
In figure, Jerome C. Glenn and Ibon Zugasti talking at the DES conference – In a very effective format, I have a usual pptx talk, but with Ibon asking a question every few slides asking for clarification. I think it is a nice approach we should use more often.
