Karl Friðriksson, Chair of the Iceland Node, organized a great schedule. It began with a public talk on global challenges hosted by several organizations, and then a meeting with the Defense Office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Iceland has no standing military – yes, in NATO but other forms of support than military) to discuss security issues of future forms of AI.
The following day we met with the Iceland Parliamentary Committee for the Future about AGI legislation and collaboration with other countries and the UN, and then ended with a talk on future technological risks for some staff of the Bank of Iceland.
Throughout the visit, Karl hosted lunches and dinners with Members of the Icelandic Centre for Future Studies, Members of the Node, and even his daughter Member of the Parliament. Unfortunately, the volcanic activity was sufficient to close the famous Blue Lagoon, but we did get to the Skylagoon and have a beer in the geothermal heated water.
Next stop: Finland.
