On September 25-27, The Parliament of Uruguay, in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), will host the Second World Summit of the Committees of the Future in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 25 to 27 September 2023. The Summit aims to build upon the first World Summit held in Helsinki in October 2022, which recognized the fundamental importance of incorporating the future in present decision-making.
The Summit will place emphasis on the critical role of parliaments and anticipatory parliamentary practice in governance. It will foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the development of new skills and competencies related to the “use of the future” in the present for more accurate decision-making. The focus of the Second Summit, Bringing the Future to the Present: The Democracy of the Future, Artificial Intelligence and Parliaments, is on exploring the interaction between present-day parliaments, the future of democracy and artificial intelligence (AI).
Among the distinguished speakers of the event, Jerome C. Glenn will be keynote speaker for a session “AI Challenges. Reflecting on the initial conditions for the next phase of evolution on the artificial intelligence, with a speech on “Anticipating a Range of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) possibilities: Initial Conditions, Rules, Guardrails, and potential for trusted UN governance models” on Sept. 26. The session will be chaired by Lydia Garrido Luzardo, Chair of the Uruguay Node of The Millennium Project. Keynote speaker for the session is also Clem Bezold, member of the Millennium Project Planning Committee, with a speech about “Anticipatory governance in the age of AI”. Shermon Cruz, Chair of the Association of Professional Futurists and of The Philippines Node of The Millennium Project, will be joining the round table on “The role of anticipatory governance in strengthening democracy in the context of evolving artificial intelligence. Transforming the present” on Sept. 27.
