The South Asia Foresight Network (SAFN) has just released its much anticipated report, “Sri Lanka Presidential Election 2024: Political and Economic Analysis,” at the National Press Club on September 9, 2024. The report, launched by Asanga Abeyagoonasekera, SAFN Chair, in collaboration with Jerome C. Glenn of The Millennium Project, Poonam Sharma from Global Strat View, and Ishini Shashipraba of SAFN, offers a comprehensive analysis of the political, economic, and social challenges facing Sri Lanka as it approaches its pivotal election on September 21, 2024.
Key findings highlight the contraction of democracy in the country, governance inefficiencies, and the looming economic crisis, while also identifying potential political alternatives such as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and National People’s Power (NPP). The report emphasizes the urgency of reform, offering recommendations for stabilizing governance, tackling corruption, and navigating foreign relations.
This report is both a diagnostic tool and a roadmap for Sri Lanka’s future. It is essential for political actors, civil society, and the international community to engage with its findings to make informed decisions that will shape the nation’s democratic and economic trajectory. SAFN calls for immediate action to address Sri Lanka’s ‘polycrisis,’ stressing the importance of international collaboration and informed policymaking as the country prepares for its future.
