In a recent webinar on “Navigating the Artificial Intelligence Landscape: Perspectives from National Academies“, co-hosted by the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) on 5 September 2024, experts gathered to discuss national academies roles with AI development.
Among the speakers, Jerome Glenn, co-founder and CEO of The Millennium Project, raised the need for a global map of AI governance status in each country – especially their AGI preparation. Other notable speakers included Phoebe Koundouri, WAAS and IAP, Garry Jacobs WAAS President and CEO, Ricardo A. Baeza-Yates, Chilean Academy of Science, and Susan Veldsman, Academy of Sciences in South Africa.
Glenn proposed that the IAP should take the lead in assessing and documenting the state of governance for both Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) across different countries. His suggestion was met with interest, and the IAP appeared to accept the idea.
The event highlighted the growing urgency for coordinated global efforts to manage AI’s rapid development and its societal impact.
