On the perfect occasion of World Futures Day 2024, a new AI-Augmented Futures Wheel tool, developed by The Millennium Project, and specifically by Rosa Alegria, Co-Chair of the Brazil Node of The Millennium Project, Gustavo Machado, and Diego Maffazzioli, members of the Node, was launched and tested on March 1.
The Futures Wheel (for more information, read FRM) was created by Jerome in 1971 and have guided futurists for the past five decades in cocreating better futures. The Futures Wheel is a foresight tool designed to help individuals and organizations explore the direct and indirect consequences of a specific change or trend. It visually maps out the potential impacts, enabling users to think systematically about the future.
The advent of an AI-augmented Futures Wheel introduces a transformative approach to strategic foresight, especially crucial as the complexity of our world escalates. This tool not only retains the core advantages of the traditional Futures Wheel, but also leverages the computational power of artificial intelligence to enhance its utility. It allows handling complexity, more efficiency in brainstorming, enhancing depth of analysis, dynamic and adaptive learning, diverse perspectives, prioritization and scenario planning, inclusive and participatory futures.
The test of the AI-augmented FW was launched during the workshop led by Shermon Cruz, APF, Chair of Philippines Node of the Millennium Project, on March 1, a parallel event to the 24-hour discussion run by the Millennium Project. This tool, launched amidst the anticipatory governance and regenerative cities hands-on workshop including almost 200 participants, signified a leap forward in our ability to navigate and cocreate participatory and preferable futures.
The group, with the support of others (e.g. Mara Di Berardo, Italy Node Co-Chair) is also working on other AI-augmented method, such as the Cross Impact analysis by Gordon and Helmer.
