Reports from the Nodes

INDIA:

Anadhavalli Mahadevan began by introducing the Madurai University and its Futures Studies PhD program. In India there is still confusion about understanding the difference between Futures Study and fortune telling (by reading palms and astrology). The Node organized a series of meetings called "Meet the Millennium" to identify and analyze issues and opportunities for India. The leading issues were women, education, employment, preservation, urbanization, rural problems (as 70-75% of population is living in rural areas) labor, health, NGOs, social problems, environment, ethics, poverty, etc.

Presentations on MP research was given to Vision India in 25 years Program, The Rotary Club, colleges and universities, public speeches, corporations, interviews, and news letters.

Articles were published in the popular "Hindu" and "Time and Day" journals. Some of the material were put in visual media for the illiterate women (e.g., concerning the environment) and exercises with youth for Visioning the Future. Some want to organize a "Think Tank" on the Water issue and Education.

General comments: Although officially illiteracy has fallen to 40%, this is misleading from the international point of view. India defines literacy as being able to write one's name in any of the nationally recognized languages. There is an equal number of males and females in specific technical schools, and a good enrollment rate of women in general basic education.
